Artist Statement
As a Dominican-born, queer dancer who works within both contemporary and vogue aesthetics, I make work that is based in my heritage, gender, sexuality, and body geometry. Inspirations researched in my recent works has dived into the 2000s rap era music mixed with the ballroom scene culture and its celebrations of life and luxury. Something I aspire when showcasing my work is leaving the audience with information about queer folks finding their community and the expressive power voguing contains within a concert space versus the club setting it comes from. The structure of my work comes from the exploration of geometrical shapes and lines, seeing the body as an architecture while being influenced by the qualities of Vogue dance. My process includes rhythmic storytelling, using house music and experimental sound, my work merges voguing and contemporary dance to research and develop self-confidence by approaching the dance as a celebration of life and overcoming adversity. As a young creative, I want to bring my appreciation of old school style music and voguing. I bring together an abstract and modernized form of dance to create a bridge towards thoughtful thinking that blends our external attitude and internal struggles. I want my work to provide a space for young queer folks like myself, to be seen, heard, and gain pride in our mind and body.
